How to Have Just a Moment of Peace

Generally speaking, living in modern times tends to be fast-paced and hectic.  Multitasking has been accepted as a skill to master.  But at some point, we realize that life is chasing us and that we are in a state of chronic movement.  If not physically, then mentally.  In this agitated state of being, the days and weeks pass by quietly.  We are distracted by what we “have” to do and never seem to feel rested or accomplished.   In a flash, years have passed.  Years of our life.  Years that we can’t get back.  Years that we did not live, but were only present for.

Where were you during those years?  We know where your physical body was, but where were you?  Your kids were with your physical body.  Your spouse/partner was with your physical body.  Your friends were with your physical body.  But where was your mind?  Maybe thinking about tomorrow, or something that went wrong yesterday.  Maybe your mind was re-living a bad experience from childhood in reaction to someone’s comment.  None of those three places that your mind went were in the moment of what was really happening…not then…not at the exact moment that you were with your child, your spouse/partner, your friend.  Your body was there, but you were not.

By being present, in the real moment, allows us to experience some contentment and peace.  The actual moment, that is, literally second to second to second, contains a lot of peace.  It does not contain the drama that we are thinking about. We bring agitation, anxiety, stress, etc., to the moments of our lives, by bringing stories and disastrous outcomes from the past, or creating fantasy stories for the future, into the moment of the present. 

You may be surprised to learn how much time your mind spends on taking you out of the moment, by creating worst case scenarios…about the past for the future.  To experience just a moment of peace, try becoming aware of your thoughts and then direct them to what is happening right now.  Any disaster or painful thought that you may have been having is not happening right now. 

To have just a moment of peace, be in your life.  Be in it right now, in this moment.  Just for a moment, let go of everything you fear.  Everything you are afraid of.  You will find peace in those moments.  And if you can do if for one moment, then maybe you can do it for two moments.  Moments like those can stretch out for longer periods of time, and before you know it, you have created a lifetime of living.

Thinking and Illness: What’s the Connection?

I have often said that stress is nothing but a thought, and aliens don’t put thoughts in our head…we choose the thoughts we think.  Certainly stress can come in the form of physical activity, but I am talking about the everyday stress created by what we think.  Most people don’t really stop and think about what their thinking, or how the thought got there.  We go from day to day, situation to situation without questioning the quality or control of our thoughts.

The interesting point of this blog is that we are in control of our thinking and thoughts.  We can choose different and more positive thoughts.  The next time you get mad, angry, frustrated, etc…, ask yourself “How am I benefiting from this way thinking…How will this thought improve the situation?”.  Generally speaking, you will find that engaging in negative, stressful thoughts won’t change the situation, but only adds stress to your mind and body.  The more of this chronic, day-to-day stress we engage in only adds to a greater chance of developing symptoms and illnesses catagorized as a ‘Stress Related Illness’.

Being aware that you can control your thinking is the first step in picking a healthier way to think.  It takes practice, but the rewards are a healthier and happier life.  It’s your choice.  Choose wellness.

Biofeedback is a fun way to learn how to control your stress and balance your mind and body.  Biofeedback has come a long way since the 1960’s.  Today’s biofeedback is computer based with engaging graphics. 

Biofeedback is a great tool to use for truly knowing what your body is doing.  Without it, it is difficult to know the small changes in hand temperature, electrical activity of your skin, heart rate variability, or specific nervous system activity.  There are many other measurements of psychophysiological functioning that are just as easy to monitor and change for improved health.

A preponderance of research has demonstrated that by being able to balance your body and bring about the “relaxation response”, that natural healing of the body can occur within that homeostatic state.

Today, stress is everywhere.  There is tremendous pressure to perform and be the best.  Americans work more than most people on the planet.  It doesn’t seem very American to say, “Relax and improve your health and your life”, but maybe there’s room for the possibility of being American and having a happy, healthy, and prosperous life.  I would say that there definitely is.

Cut or Reduce Healthcare Costs

 Three Things To Do To Cut Your Healthcare Costs

If you are lucky enough to have insurance, you know the joy of paying the monthly premium.  On top of that monthly payment, you may need to actually use the insurance you pay for, which means deductibles need to be met and co-pays need to be paid.  Should you need major medical treatment, you will certainly pay less than a non-insured person,  but it still means paying more to use the insurance.  Here are three things to do to reduce the chances of actually needing to use your insurance:

  • (1) Exercise. It doesn’t have to be at an Olympic training level, you can gain significant benefit from simple walking.
  • (2) Eat nutritious. I didn’t say “diet” because eating healthfully just means sensible and nutritious. Your body needs quality building blocks to repair itself and function optimally.
  • (3) Keep your mental balance. Stress plays a major role in disrupting physiological processes. Stress related disorders make up the majority of medical diagnoses. Learning to manage stress and cultivate a positive outlook has a major impact on wellness.

Until an insurance plan can be offered for those who make an effort to be healthy, you can decrease the co-pays and deductibles by staying healthy in the first place.
